Welcome to the CPV Sentinel Standby Power Project
Competitive Power Ventures ( CPV ) is dedicated to creating reliable, affordable and environmentally responsible solutions to growing energy needs. CPV satisfies growing demands for electricity with clean energy sources. CPV 's Wind Farms are designed to provide a steady source of renewable energy. They are complemented by CPV 's state-of-the-art natural gas Sentinel Standby Power Project designed to generate electricity when needed to protect the region from dangerous blackouts.
CPV is pleased to partner with the community of Desert Hot Springs, Riverside County and the Coachella Valley to provide local benefits and regional energy solutions.
Standby power is the solution
In California we have increasing demands for new, cleaner, and more efficient electricity generation facilities.
In response to these mandates, the California Public Utilities Commission has enabled Southern California Edison (SCE) to procure 3,200 megawatts (MW) of capacity by 2013 and to bring more power online by 2010.
Today, CPV Sentinel is the only new power project with approved energy supply contracts to meet these 2010 energy needs.
Protects against blackouts
CPV Sentinel will operate only during periods of peak demand for electricity – 15 percent to 30 percent of the year – to protect against blackouts and stabilize the overall power grid system.
CPV Sentinel will generate 800 MW of power – enough power to protect the entire Coachella Valley in time of crisis.
Benefits the Valley’s groundwater
CPV Sentinel will actually provide a major benefit to the Coachella Valley water supply at a time when we all need to focus on creative water plans. CPV
Sentinel will:
- Purchase and import for recharging the groundwater sub basin up to twice the amount of water the power project will ever use
- Fund projects to conserve potable water in the west end of the CoachellaValley in amount at least equal to the amount of water which it uses
The ideal location for the Valley’s needed standby power project
The CPV Sentinel site is 37 acres adjacent to SCE’s Devers Substation north of I-10 and east of Highway 62. The site is already zoned for a power plant and transmission lines are already in place.
